production companies

Production companies are organisations who set up funding, sponsorship, casting, scripting and promoting. there are two kinds of production company, the independent production companies an the major production companies.

Here are some examples of independent production companies:

Independent companies tend to use there own savings as a means of funding, as they are limited to the amount of funding they have. they don't usually work with well know performers, and they usually work with a small production teams.

Here are some examples of major production companies:

These companies work with well known performers which helps them make more profits and therefore having more money to go to their next production, however they usually have a large amount of funding from investors. They also usually work with large production teams.

audience analysis

These are the results that we received after sending out our questionnaire regarding our horror:
according o our research 58.8% of people we asked said that they find a stalker aged 30 and ver he most scary,we will take this on board and will make our antagonist over 30 years old.

In addition to this our antagonist will be male as 82.4% of people we asked said that they find male antagonist will scarier than a female antagonist. our chosen gender for our antagonist is supported by our audience research.

Title analysis

Titles are important as they help to:

  • set the genre
  • incite into what the film will be about
  • represents the movie
  • stays in the memorys of the audience
  • usually leads you to the first judgement about the film

Analysis of paranormal activity:

Image result for paranormal activity title

The use of the static effect is stereotypical of paranormal activity, it leads us to believe that this will be what the film will be based mostly upon, also stereotypical of a paranormal film is the white mist around the outside of the font. The way the name is not in sync (distorted) foreshadows chaos.

camera shots/angles analysis

Camera shots/angles analysis of 28 days later:
In 28 days later we see a wide range of camera angles, for example the long shot and the close up.
Examples of  close ups would be:

These are two screen shots of close ups from the movie which happen consecutively, by doing this they show us the feelings and emotions of the protagonist towards the news paper. Doing this helps up to understand the situation better as important details are shown this way. the close up of the protagonists face intensifies the emotions.

Here are two examples of long shots:

By showing they show loneliness and isolation. This shows vulnerability and a lack of power in the protagonist. These shots have also been used to magnify the destruction that has been caused to the  city, the scenes have also been used to emphasize the emptiness of the city.

History of horror

history of horror movie:

this is a time lined list of popular horror movies:

In my time line you can see how we have moved through different sub-genres of horror, such as; gothic, science fiction, zombie and psychological. However even though we see new movies with new themes all the time, we see that the new films are forever using remixes of old films, they take it and make it relevant to todays audience.
The silent era film types gathered their ideas and were inspired by Gothic literature. We can also see that as we go through time that things such war affect the themes that are shown in horror movies, horror films tapped into the fear of invasion which lead to a pulp science fiction cycle with films such as "thing from anouther world" in 1951, we also see this with the introduction of Godzilla in 1954.
Another factor that has influenced horror is the advances that we have in technology. This has lead to the psychological sub-genre that we see in more modern films, a higher quality in technology has lead to a further development graphics, making the scenes more realistic. we see this in films such as evil dead (2013):

Mise-En-Scene

Mise-en-scene is the arrangement of scenery and stage properties in a play, this includes:

    • Setting and prop

    • Consume, hair and make up

    • Facial expression and body language

    • Lighting and colour

    • Positioning of people and objects

This is the scene I looked at:

The use of colour in the mise-en-scene creates a sense of sadness, innocence and danger. The girl is wearing white and blue these colours represent sadness and innocence, the colour that is being projected onto the girls face, assumingly from a laptop, is also blue, this could represent coldness. The redness of the sheets makes us think of danger, However the child who is standing in the door way is not in focus so we see him as just a dark silhouette, this leads us to assume that he is evil or dangerous. He is positioned in behind the girl this a stereotypical place for a killer, or dangerous person to stand (behind their victim). This scene is set in her bed room in her home, this is relevant because the home is supposed to be safe place, and we all have a bed room of some kind so it’s relatable to the audience. In the scene the lighting is very dim, this makes us feel like something bad is going to happen, it also makes us concentrate on the girls facial expressions more then we would if the whole room was lit up.

Evaluation Of My Preliminary Task

My Evaluation of the Preliminary Task:

Whilst doing my preliminary task I have improved my editing skills as I now know how to edit match on action as well as shot reverse shot, prior to the preliminary task I hadn't had any experience with the editing program that we used so I’m quite proud of the end result. I have also learnt how important it is not to break the 180 degree rule, as it makes the audience become very disorientated. As well as his I have learnt how to create my own shooting schedule, and how important it is to create a story bored as it makes it easier to make sure that what you’re shooting is what you've planned. Creating a shooting schedule helps you to know what should be happening in each of the scenes and helps you know what you should be shooting in that camera angle.

We had to film our preliminary task twice as after we had finished editing it the first time around we noticed that we had actually broken the 180 degree rule. Having found this out, we re-filmed the whole thing and then reedited. However the second time we didn’t follow the original script as the camera ran out of battery.

Here are some of the comments that have been left on our video:

As you can see the feed back is mostly positive.

Location Of Our Preliminary Task

This will be the location of our preliminary task.

We have chosen this specific location in order the represent a normal setting for a game of chess. As the room is located at our school, it is easily accessible and also it successfully represents an afterschool chess club. The lighting in this room is satisfactory for our needs. It is also generally quiet which makes the audio sound better.

Our Preliminary Task Ideas

Our Group Discussion In The Form Of A Mind Map:

Preliminary Task

In our preliminary task we will be using continuity editing. Continuity editing is a style of film editing and video editing, the purpose is to smooth over the editing process.

In our preliminary task we must have:
  • A character entering the room.
  • The character walking across the room to sit opposite the second character.
  • The characters will then exchange a few lines of dialog.

We should then show:
  • Shot reverse shot.
  • Match on action.
  • 180-degree rule.

Shot reverse shot.

This usually occurs when two characters are exchanging dialogue, it switches between the two characters as they speak to each other, but the camera is always pointing to the person tho is talking.

Match on action.
This is where there is a cut in the scene whilst the character is still doing the same movement, however it should still flow smoothly.

180-degree rule.

This is where you can not more the camera more then 180 degrees round the characters as is will distort the audience and your characters will have changed there position.
