In my time line you can see how we have moved through different sub-genres of horror, such as; gothic, science fiction, zombie and psychological. However even though we see new movies with new themes all the time, we see that the new films are forever using remixes of old films, they take it and make it relevant to todays audience.
The silent era film types gathered their ideas and were inspired by Gothic literature. We can also see that as we go through time that things such war affect the themes that are shown in horror movies, horror films tapped into the fear of invasion which lead to a pulp science fiction cycle with films such as "thing from anouther world" in 1951, we also see this with the introduction of Godzilla in 1954.
Another factor that has influenced horror is the advances that we have in technology. This has lead to the psychological sub-genre that we see in more modern films, a higher quality in technology has lead to a further development graphics, making the scenes more realistic. we see this in films such as evil dead (2013):
